About This Tool
The Universal Travel Adapter Checker helps travelers avoid frying their electronics when traveling abroad. Different countries use different electrical standardsโvoltage, frequency, and plug typesโand using the wrong adapter or plugging into incompatible outlets can damage your devices or even cause safety hazards.
Our tool instantly checks compatibility between your home country and your destination, telling you exactly what you need: a simple plug adapter, a voltage transformer, or nothing at all. We cover 90+ countries worldwide with accurate, up-to-date electrical standards data.
How to Use
Select Your Source Country
Choose where you're coming from (where your device was purchased or where you live). The tool will auto-detect your location if possible.
Select Your Destination
Choose the country you're traveling to. You can search by country name or browse the list.
See Instant Compatibility Results
Get immediate results showing plug compatibility, voltage requirements, and whether you need an adapter or transformer. We'll even provide links to buy the right adapter on Amazon.
General FAQs
Why do countries have different plugs?
Different countries developed their electrical systems independently over time, leading to various plug designs and electrical standards. There are over 15 different plug types worldwide (Type A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I, L, M, N, O, etc.), each with different shapes, pin configurations, and safety features. This is why you need adapters when traveling internationally.
What is the difference between an adapter and a converter?
Adapter: A simple physical connector that allows your plug to fit into a different socket type. It does NOT change voltage. Use an adapter when your plug shape doesn't match the socket, but the voltage is compatible.
Converter/Transformer: A device that changes the voltage from one level to another (e.g., 120V to 230V). Use a converter when the voltage in your destination country is different from what your device requires. Most modern electronics (laptops, phones, chargers) are dual-voltage (100-240V) and only need an adapter, not a converter.
How do I know if my device is dual voltage?
Check the label on your device or its power adapter/charger. Look for voltage information like:
- 100-240V or 110-240V = Dual voltage (works worldwide with just an adapter)
- 120V only or 230V only = Single voltage (may need a converter)
Most modern devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets, cameras, electric toothbrushes) are dual-voltage. Older devices, hair dryers, curling irons, and some kitchen appliances are often single-voltage and may need a converter.
